Love and Jazz

by You Have My Word

Passion is beautiful – it’s critical for pursuing the things that make us tick. It’s uncontrollable, it can’t be harnessed, it can’t be put in a box. Passion is contagious too – a lot like love.

Love is beautiful – it’s the steady core that steers our energy. It keeps us grounded, it’s comforting, it is often misinterpreted but it can be demonstrated.

“I never liked jazz music because jazz doesn’t resolve. But I was outside Bagdad Theater in Portland one night when I saw a man playing the saxophone. I stood there for fifteen minutes, and he never opened his eyes.

After that I liked jazz music.

Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if they are showing you the way.” (Donald Miller, Blue like Jazz)

It often hacked me off when new parents would post hundreds upon hundreds of pictures and status updates about their newborn baby and gory details of their days:

  • [Status] Johnny woke up at 3 am screaming – oh no!
  • [Photo] Here’s Johnny eating mushy breakfast.
  • [Status] Johnny has thrown up all his food and it’s not even lunch time! What a day.
  • [Photos] Here’s Johnny in the sane, Johnny’s first tooth, Johnny and grandma, Johnny and Spot the dog, Johnny with his eyes open, Johnny with his eyes closed…

I’m starting to understand why they do this… They can’t help it! When you love something, you can’t help but share it. I love music – it’s part of who I am, the conversations I have, it influences how I write and act and think. I can’t help but share it. I love writing too – that’s quite evident here – it seeps out of me effortlessly!

What is your passion? What do you love?

Black Eyed Peas asks a poignant question: “Where is the Love?” Yes, the song is about society in general, but doesn’t that apply to you? Where is your love?

Find that thing that drives you crazy, and don’t let it slip – let it fuel you, break you, build you, chase you, help you dream and deny fear. Find the thing that gives you reason to carry on, let it consume you, and show others the way.

Do. Not. Ever. Let. It. Go.
