Fish-moths and feelings

by You Have My Word

Fish-moths bore
through paper more
than your
feelings gnaw
at your core –
raw
and sore
from being clawed
through the hole in your chest.

Eating away slow
and no one knows
because the cupboard’s closed,
like you chose:
keep a pose
so it doesn’t show.
But you can’t grow
if you sink so low
because leaves can’t reach the sunlight.

So your shame
hurts more than you say
and that’s OK.
You’ll wake with fish-moths again
and feign
another day
of pain
and heart-stains
hoping no one will make a fuss.
